If you don’t have a lot of money to spend on buying a home, you can still find a great deal on a home, but a contractor will charge you a lot of money for his services. If you buy a home without a contractor, you are paying him for the work he does, the materials and supplies that he provides, and the work he does in between.
For a contractor, the main reason they charge so much is that they have to make a profit. So the price they charge is not the same as the cost of the house itself. That’s the key to this whole thing. It’s not that a contractor can’t charge a good price, but rather that the price they charge is often a good deal more.
I have worked for a contractor and I have spent countless hours debating with him about his prices. The reason I say so is because I can’t stop myself from asking the “what in the world is he going to charge me for this?” question. He has no idea so he can’t charge me what I want to pay him, so I have to ask him what he’s going to charge me and how much.
And then he just says, “It is a lot.” So he is a contractor in the truest sense of the word.
I have to ask him.
ThredUp is a site where contractors and homeowners can find and rate each other. It’s supposed to be a more efficient way for contractors to make deals than competing with each other over price. I think, though, that ThredUp is a lot better than that. It’s a site that’s geared towards consumers, where the site owner has absolutely NO idea how much a contractor is going to charge.

I think it has absolutely nothing to do with the price. Its just that I think that having the ability to rate a contractor and see how much they’re worth is a much better way of making a deal.
